Today (January 22nd) was the first day of the spring semester! My first class was Dr. Smirnova's Social Studies and technology course. In class today, we made our name tags. On the back of them, we all wrote four things: the name of a social studies teacher that stuck out in our mind, three qualities that good social studies teachers have, what we thought social studies was, and how we think social studies should be taught. Then, we shared with a partner our answers. We practiced active listening in this part, because we had to really listen to and remember our partners answers, because our next task as partners was to introduce each other to another pair! Talking to my peers showed me things that we all had in common about social studies, and common struggles that we all had. This activity helped me learn more about my classmates, and also give me an example of an introductory activity I can do in my own future classroom one day.
After class, I watched a video (linked below) that showed how much time students of today spend with technology, and how little it is used in their learning. In 2019, this cannot be the reality. Everybody, from toddlers to the elderly, uses technology during their daily lives, and it's a shame that it isn't used more often in the classroom. Since students are already using it all of the time, educators must take advantage of this, and find fun, engaging, and creative ways to use technology in the classroom to benefit student learning. Throughout this course, I hope to learn more ways to incorporate technology into my everyday classroom routine, for the benefit of both my students and myself.
