First Day of Fieldwork

On February 28th, my class and I got to meet our second-grade fieldwork class! We all separated into our groups, and each group had a different get to know you activity for the students. My group and I created a board game that included different questions such as "What makes you happy", "What's your favorite color", "Do you have siblings", "What's your favorite holiday", "What are your hobbies", etc. These questions were designed to get to know what the second-graders were like so that we could best design instruction for them. Through our activity, my group and I learned a little bit about each student, and got to see the personalities of the students as well. We saw which students would work well together, and which ones wouldn't. This was valuable information for my group and I when it came time for creating our three lesson plans.

What also helped my group and I was the fact that after the students left the class for lunch, the classroom teacher talked to my class and I about the second-graders. He told us about his classroom management system, which tied into our lesson topics. He used a system he called "second-grade bucks". He would hand out coins to the students while they were working if they were on task. The students would then put it away in their "bank", and every Friday the students could purchase items from the classroom store with their money. My group and I were very excited to hear this, as we thought that we could tie that into our lessons. The teacher also let us know which students in the class needed extra support in the classroom, which is very valuable information. This let my group and I know who to focus our HLP's on for our lessons. Overall, this was a very informative day in the second-grade classroom. I was very excited to begin my teaching the following class!
