The Powerful Elements of Social Studies!

When teaching social studies, teachers should keep a few things in mind. First of all, social studies is not just learning about history, although that's very important too. Social studies encompasses far more than just that. Social studies includes economics, civics, geography and much more. Social studies shows us how our mistakes in the past and how we can learn from them. Social studies also gives us a way to predict what is going to happen in the future based on past events. There are five powerful elements of social studies that need to be included in order to make a social studies lesson a good one.

1. Meaningful: Students need to know that there's a reason that they're learning the content to motivate them. Make sure that reason is clear to them.

2. Integrative: Social studies is very layered, and good lessons bring these layers together and show connections.

3. Value-based: Good social studies lessons promote good values for students.

4. Challenging: In order to really engage students, the lesson should not be too easy. Students like to be challenged and there's plenty of opportunity for that in social studies.

5. Active: All students need to be actively involved in the lessons.
